Terrazzo ist ein künstlicher, mineralischer Werkstoff für Fußbodenbeläge. Durch die Beimischung von farbigen Zuschlagsstoffen wie Kies oder Splitt und das anschließende Schleifen erhält er seine dekorative, glänzende Oberfläche. Die Herstellung von Terrazzo-Böden ist in Deutschland durch DIN 18353 geregelt. Terrazzo ist ein Material, das im Nachkriegsdeutschland umfangreich im Städtebau als Bodenbelag in Fluren und Treppenhäusern eingesetzt wurde, gesäumt von Geländern aus Messing und schwarzem Gummi. Das Material erscheint dabei als natürliches Gestein. Die Abbildung eines natürlichen Steins auf der Terrazzoplatte kontrastiert die Künstlichkeit des Untergrundes.


Terrazzo is an artificial mineral material for floorings. By adding colored gravel or stone chippings and through the subsequent polish, it attains its decorative and shiny surface. The production of terrazzo floors in Germany is regulated by DIN 18353. Terrazzo is a material that was extensively used in postwar Germany in urban construction for the floors of hallways and staircases, accompanied by railings made of brass and black rubber. The material has the appearance of natural stone. The depiction of a natural stone on the terrazzo tile stands in contrast to the artificiality of the ground.
